How to make your house feel like home

By qepdz Jan15,2024

It takes me some time to feel comfortable in a new home. The feeling of unfamiliarity persists even after the boxes have been unpacked and food has been stocked in the refrigerator and pantry. This feeling can last for weeks or even months after the move. Sometimes, the feeling never goes away.

There’s a huge difference between living somewhere you rely on to provide you with necessities like a bed or a bathroom and living somewhere you feel comfortable. This is particularly true for rentals. You may find it difficult to settle in a place where you will not be living for longer than a few months or years or that is far from your style or taste. A sense of belonging is all in the perception. No matter what your surroundings are, you can cultivate warmth and personality wherever you live.

Hygge (pronounced hooga) is an American term that originated in Denmark. Hygge is a Danish term that describes a feeling of comfort and coziness. Making your house feel comfortable is the key to making it feel like your home. You are the only one who knows what makes you happy, warm, and safe. Brainstorming these things and figuring out how to incorporate them in your home or apartment will help you nurture a feeling of belonging. Here are a few ideas to help you get started.

Hang art

My friends are always surprised when they hang artwork as soon as they move. I say this as someone who has lived in her current home for over a year and a half and still has a dozen or so waiting-to-be-dealt-with framed prints and paintings leaning against a wall in the spare bedroom. There are real benefits to adorning the walls of your home with art sooner than later.

According to research, simply viewing art can help reduce stress and even make you happier. Hanging art in the home not only makes you feel good, but it also helps to express your personality. Even I, an art-hanging procrastinator from way back, always make sure to hang a few select pieces immediately upon moving in, namely, any paintings my mom had done for me and an abstract ink drawing of the solar system my husband drew me when we first started dating. You’ll feel more at home if you surround yourself with items that you enjoy.

Display items that bring back memories of your childhood home

Most of us remember our childhood home or apartment as the place where we felt loved and safe for the first time. It’s impossible to recreate your childhood home, but you can have a few things that remind you. You might have a piece of special furniture, a music box from an old bedroom, or some dated board games. They can radiate comfort and warmth from their past. Choose a few items that bring back memories of your childhood and use them to create a homey atmosphere wherever you are.

Keep it Clean

Do you know that the bed feels best when your sheets are freshly laundered? It’s hard to feel comfortable in an environment that is dirty or cluttered. You can make your home more cozy by cleaning it. If you want to be truly comfortable and relaxed, make sure your home is clean. Keep your floors, surfaces, and sheets clean.

Adopt a pet

Adopting a pet at your local animal shelter is a great way to bring home the love. Animals can make us healthier and happier. The simple act of tickling the chin of a cat or a dog is a great way to reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Even though caring for a pet is a big responsibility, it’s hard to beat the feeling of being welcomed by a pet who is excited to see you. Consider taking on an animal if you have the money, time, and desire.

Soften your surroundings

In my previous apartment, I bought a secondhand couch from a thrift shop. It was old and scratchy. The sofa was functional and clean, but I didn’t make it my favorite place to relax and nap until I added some soft throw blankets. It’s easy for anyone to find a cozy throw that will make any room more inviting and peaceful. If you are anxious or stressed, consider purchasing a weighted throw. Weighted blankets are popular bedding accessories that apply a light amount of pressure to your body. This helps you relax and feel calmer.

Go Green

Plants and flowers, like animals and art, are recognized for their ability to improve our moods and reduce stress. We can bring a sense of hygge into our homes by adding greenery and flowers. Even if you’re not a green thumb, many houseplants can be grown by even the most seasoned plant killers. You can pot herbs in mason jars and place them in front of your window. Buy fresh flowers every week to display on your dining table.
